Na het akoestische MTV Unplugged in New York-album waren er veel fans die uitkeken naar een versterkt live-album van de populaire grungeband. In oktober 1996 ging deze wens in vervulling met het album From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah.

Op het album horen we opnames die tussen 1989 en 1993 werden opgenomen in Londen (1989), Del Mar (1991), Amsterdam (1991), Seattle (1991, 1993 en 1994), Reading (1992) en Springfield (1993).

De Australische promo voor From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah

Ter promotie werden 'Aneurysm', 'Drain You', 'Lithium' en 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' op single uitgebracht. Ook verscheen er in Australië een fraaie box met de singles 'Aneurysm', 'Heart-shaped Box' en 'Polly' en de promo-CD Nevermind: It's an Interview.
