Sony patenteert nieuwe controller genaamd 'Eyepad'
Sony is bezig met een nieuwe controller, heeft Gamechup ontdekt. In een patent dat in 2012 door Sony is ingediend, wordt een controller in de vorm van een tablet beschreven. De controller bestaat slechts uit een touchpad en twee lege randen.
De controller, in de vorm van een tablet, bevat naast een touchpad ook motion sensors, waarschijnlijk voor Playstation Move-achtige functionaliteit. Ook zou het mogelijk moeten zijn om 3D virtuele knoppen te genereren op de randen van de tablet. De officiële beschrijving luidt als volgt:
"An input device for an entertainment device comprises a first main surface, one or more side edges, one or more motion sensors operable to generate motion data, and a wireless communicator for transmitting the motion data to the entertainment device, wherein an elongate illuminated region extends along some or all of one or more of the side edges; in addition the input device may comprise a first stereoscopic camera and a second stereoscopic camera having respective viewpoints located at opposing corners of a first area of the main surface, the field of view of each stereoscopic camera encompassing a first volume of space immediately above the first area, wherein the first and second stereoscopic cameras are operable to generate respective stereoscopic images, from which a first depth map and complementary second depth map may be generated for opposite sides of an object placed within the first volume of space."
Of we de controller ooit in echt zullen zien, weten we niet. Interessant is het in ieder geval wel. Dat Sony touchpads gaat toepassen, is vrijwel zeker. De huidige PlayStation Vita-console heeft al een touchpad op de achterkant, en op recente foto's is te zien dat het prototype van de nieuwe PlayStation 4-controller een touchpad bevat. De kans dat we iets gaan zien wat hierop lijkt, is best redelijk.
