Verplicht aan het internet met Dragon Quest X
Square-Enix heeft bekendgemaakt dat Dragon Quest X: The Wake of the Five Tribes: Online niet alleen soortgelijke online functionaliteiten krijgt die vergelijkbaar zijn met Monster Hunter, maar ook dat je met het spel constant aan het internet verbonden moet zijn.
Voor de internetloze Wii's is dat slecht nieuws, mocht je volledig in het spel willen duiken. In een FAQ dat Square heeft gepost staat het volgende te lezen: “Is it not possible to play without an internet connection. It’s possible to play offline for the first few hours after the start of the game. However, to play all elements of the game, an internet connection is required.”
Het schijnt daarnaast, zo blijkt uit een vertaling, dat je moet betalen voor de online services. Hoewel online gaming veel populariteit geniet in Japan, wordt het niet altijd gewaardeerd dit soort opties in singleplayer-games zoals Dragon Quest te stoppen. Super Smash Bros.-designer Masahiro Sakurai roept gamers echter op mee te gaan met hun tijd.
“After hearing that it’s online, the number of people who say the classic style Dragon Quest would be better is probably not low”, zegt Sakurai. "However, in a game industry where evolution and sudden changes are tolerated, even considered expected, just treading the same path would be be troubling. It’s being made by people who’ve made sound titles in the past, so I’m greatly looking forward to it.”
