Wii tekorten houden nog wel even aan

Nintendo heeft gezegd dat de Wii tekorten nog wel even aan kunnen gaan houden. Ze zijn niet in staat om aan de vraag te voldoen. Hoewel ze natuurlijk blij zijn met het succes vinden ze het niet tof dat een hoop gamers nog steeds zitten te wachten op een Wii. Nintendo doet er alles aan om zo snel mogelijk alles op te lossen, een hogere productie is al aangekondigd.

Perrin Kaplan (Nintendo Amerika):

There is a lot going on behind the scenes in terms of working on what we are producing and the numbers continue to rise but the product is so very popular that we may see a supply / demand situation last for some time. We are at absolute maximum production and doing everything we can. The number of units that we have been able to produce has far exceeded our hardware production in the past and the production levels of a lot of our competitors but demand continues to be really high. People are being really diligent about working with retailers to locate one but we are cognisent of the fact that a lot of fans are not able to get their hands on one yet. We are asking them to be patient and to know that we are working on this as fast as we can.

Op de vraag of de Wii misschien niet meer had kunnen kosten (300 ipv 250 dollar) antwoord Kaplan dat dit wel had gekund, maar ze de Wii aantrekkelijk geprijsd wilden hebben:

There was definitely that possibility. There are so many people who are very much liking the system and while the price that it's at is very much mass market we probably could have folded at a higher price but I think that it was always Nintendo's intent to make it a product that is appealing to the mass market

In totaal zijn er al zo'n 6.5 miljoen Wii units verkocht wereldwijd, 2.5M in Amerika, 2M in Japan en ongeveer 2M in Europa en de rest van de wereld. Ter vergelijking, de Xbox 360 staat op ongeveer 10M en de PS3 op 3.5M.
