[update] Europese BC nog niet perfect

The Inquirer heeft hun PAL PS3 binnen gekregen, en gingen gelijk aan de slag om te kijken welke PS2 favorieten te spelen waren op de nieuwe console van Sony.
Ze probeerden de volgende games:

God of War
MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
MGS 3: Snake Eater
Shadow of the Colossus
Guitar Hero 2
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
Okami
GTA: Liberty City Stories
Eragon
Final Fantasy X-2
Ratchet & Clank 3
Lumines Plus

Uiteindelijk draaide alleen Eragon op de nieuwe hardware, vreemd genoeg draaide in-house GoW ook niet.
Let wel dat deze PS3 nog op firmversie 1.5 draait, terwijl de uiteindelijke spelcomputers die je in de winkel kan kopen staan gepland voor versie 1.6, welke waarschijnlijk veel meer PS2 games zal ondersteunen.

Het verschil in de BC ondersteuning van de PAL machines zit in het feit dat deze een andere manier gebruiken om BC te verkrijgen. De Europese consoles hebben een softwarematige oplossing, in plaats van een aparte BC chip aan boord.

Harrison heeft in een interview op het GDC al getracht om de misverstanden de wereld uit te helpen:

"The strategy has not changed. We have made a technical change to the machine which moves us from being a hardware-embedded backwards compatibility solution to one which is a combination of hardware and software,"
Volgens Harrison komt het allemaal goed met BC, en zijn ze net wat dingetjes aan het rechtzetten. Maar zullen de meeste PS(2) games gewoon speelbaar zijn op de PAL PS3.
""While that has unfortunately reduced the total number of games that will be compatible from the PS2 catalogue, it's important to remember that the PS1 catalogue remains unchanged, and definitely, March 23, we expect over 1000 titles to be playable for PlayStation 2. Within that list is the vast majority of games you would want to play. [...]So I think everybody just needs to calm down and be comfortable that the strategy is still in place."
Don't panic. 23 maart zal de uiteindelijke BC lijst worden vrijgegeven.
