Live 8 voor G8
Vandaag zijn in London, Cornwall, Parijs, Tokyo, Johannesburg, Rome, Berlijn en Moskou de Live 8-concerten begonnen. Later op de dag vinden er nog meer concerten plaats in Philadelphia en Barrie (Canada). In totaal dus tien concerten rond de wereld, die de leiders van de G8 landen aan moeten sporen op de komende top in Schotland knopen door te hakken over armoedebestrijding en het opheffen van handelsbarrières. De show in Londen werd geopend door ex-Beatle Paul McCartney en U2, die samen Sgt Pepper's Loneley Hearts Club Band ten gehore brachten, vanwege de openingszin "It was 20 years ago today"; 20 jaar geleden vonden namelijk de eerste Live Aid concerten plaats.U2-zanger Bono zei in een openingsspeech: "Dit is ons moment, dit is onze tijd, dit is onze kans op te komen voor wat juist is. Het gaat ons niet om liefdadigheid maar om rechtvaardigheid." Bono benadrukte dat de doelstelling niet het inzamelen van geld is, in tegenstelling tot Live Aid 1985, waar organisator Bob Geldof op het podium nog wanhopig uitriep: "There are people dying now, so just give us the money!" Ditmaal gaat het om bewustwording van wat de rijke landen op de wereld zouden kunnen doen om de situatie van veel arme landen te verbeteren: zorgen voor schuldsanering en eerlijke handelsvoorwaarden, zonder de invoerheffingen die het zo duur maken produkten vanuit 3e-wereld landen naar de rijkere landen te exporteren, dat dat voor velen onmogelijk is.
Critici zeggen dat Live 8 de problemen simplificeert en de nadruk teveel op schuldsanering en dus geld legt, terwijl de echte problemen de politiek complexe handelsbarrières zijn en slecht beleid door regeringen van 3e-wereld landen. Maar Bob Geldof zegt dat de shows alle problemen onder de aandacht brengen. Na de G8-top van volgende week zullen we weten of Live 8 hout gesneden heeft. Uiteraard gaat het ook om meer algemene bewustmaking van de problemen van arme landen, waarvan de effecten niet direct meetbaar zijn.
In Londen hebben 150.000 mensen gratis kaarten voor het concert in Hyde Park weten te bemachtigen, terwijl nog eens 55.000 op een scherm meekijken. Onder de optredende artiesten zijn naast eedergenoemden nog Elton John, Madonna, Robbie Williams, Snoop Dogg, Coldplay, REM en The Who. In Philadelphia geven o.a. andere Will Smith, Alicia Keys, Destiny's Child, Bon Jovi en Stevie Wonder acte de presence. In Parijs staan o.a. The Cure, Sheryl Crow, Shakira, Muse en Zuchero op de planken. Komende woensdag, de eerste dag van de G8-top, is er nog een elfde show in het Schotse Edinburgh.

Je zou er mischien gewoon blij mee moeten zijn er dat er uberhaupt wat gebeurt. En nee ik zeg niet dat dit "de" oplossing is.
Tot nu toe zijn er aardige optredens, vooral dat van die zwarte zangeres (weet ff haar naam niet meer) die rond half zes optrad.Nog meer? Als er bij de hulporganisaties eens niet zo veel aan de strijkstok blijft hangen en als er in die arme landen eens het regime wordt omvergegooid kun je pas effectief iets doen. Regeringsleiders die alles in eigen zak steken afzetten..... Schulden kwijtschelden heeft geen nut, want er komen toch weer nieuwe.

We are not sure if Live8 will produce a time schedule prior to the event, but the first details are emerging. We keep you posted.
The Berlin show: 14:00 Die Toten Hosen, Wir sind Helden, Söhne Mannheims, 15:00 Katherine Jenkins, BAP, Audioslave and Green Day, 16.00: Juli, Silbermond, Chris de Burgh, 17:00 Brian Wilson, Sasha and a-ha, 18:00 Daniel Powter, Renee Olstead, Joana Zimmer, Juan Diego Florez and Reamonn and at 19:00 Roxy Music, Mittermaier, Faithless and Herbert Grönemeyer.
Neil Young will close out the show in Canada, accompanied by the Fisk University Jubilee Choir. Gates open at 9 a.m. and the first of 21 confirmed acts will begin performing at 11 a.m.
In London all the singers will perform on a 280ft-wide by 60ft-deep revolving stage. But they have been told to keep to a strict time-limit of 15 minutes (7 minutes in Berlin). If they don't, they may find the stage starts moving while they're singing. No time schedule yet, but Sir Paul McCartney will close Live8 with a moving rendition of The Beatles' classic The Long and Winding Road.
Moscow's Live 8 concert will take place on Vasilyevsky Spusk, starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Pet Shop Boys are expected to take the stage at 8 p.m.

07:00 a.m. -- Live 8 on CTV signs on -- Host Seamus O'Regan welcomes to viewers to an unprecedented day of coverage with live performances from Johannesburg and possible recaps from Tokyo. Throughout the morning, O'Regan will introduce acts performing around the world as each Live 8 concert signs on for broadcast. Jon Dore will report live on location from Park Place in Barrie as the production crew puts the finishing touches on Live 8 preparations and the first concert-goers begin to arrive.

Ja het is oneerlijk verdeeld inderdaad. Als je voor een liedje zingen een paar miljoen krijgt en voor het nemen van zeer belangrijke beslissingen voor miljoenen mensen slechts een fractie daarvan, dan is het wel vreemd verdeeld.

Ik vond het wél een mooi gebeuren, good old but still alive and kicking Pink Floyd was fenominaal, vooral het laatste nummer. The Who, Roxy Music en Sting zijn een beetje ingeslapen ouwe-lullen-bands maar toch niet onverdienstelijk. Paul McCartney en George Michael en ook Madonna vond ik onverwacht deugen terwijl ik eigenlijk niks met ze heb. Bij dit soort evenementen moet je altijd naar de BBC kijken, Ned 3 is wat dit betreft een absulute no-go-area!

Live8 is gewoon goed, of het nu helpt of niet...trouwens; als je wilt weten wat de vorige LiveAid heeft opgeleverd: de hele wereld kent het. Alleen dus al het stukje bewustwording heeft waarschijnlijk al genoeg opgeleverd!
