'Ico en SotC waren niet goed genoeg'

Het blijft een doodzonde als geweldige games slecht verkopen. Dit overkwam de twee Playstation 2-juweeltjes Ico en Shadow of the Colossus. Beide games worden als uniek beschouwd en vaak opgevoerd in argumenten over games als kunst. Ligt hetzelfde lot in het verschiet voor de aankomende PS3-topper The Last Guardian?

Edge Magazine zocht in een interview met Team ICO-baas Fumito Ueda waar het aan lag dat zijn games zo matig hebben verkocht, Zouden gamers originaliteit toch niet waarderen en liever het comfort zoeken van gevestigde franchises die ze kennen? Volgens Ueda ligt het probleem niet bij de spelers, maar bij het product, “I think the problem is different. I believe the issue is with the product. The fact that Ico and SOTC didn’t sell well is because they weren’t good enough. They didn’t have enough to appeal to users."

Hij is van plan om het anders aan te pakken met Team ICO's nieuwe game, “The Last Guardian wants to learn from this. I’m making the game so that it’s appealing, with the hope that many people will give it a try and love it.” Ueda en zijn team moesten veel uitdagingen overwinnen om de PS3-game te maken, "With Ico, the way the AI was implemented was a challenge, and in SOTC, the way you could climb those bosses was another. In this game, I'm implementing both together while applying a huge brush-up that pushes the PS3 to its limit. This is quite a task, and we still have a lot of work to perfect it."

"All my games feature a wall," legt de Japanse ontwikkelaar de overeenkomst en verschillen tussen zijn games uit. "In the first, it was about language, while the second was more about the thinking. This time, it goes beyond that, with a creature that can't speak and has its own behaviour. So they were about situations. I'd like to come to a point where I could really communicate with a character through words in a very natural manner."

Gamers die Ueda's creaties nooit hebben ervaren mogen hun fout ergens dit jaar inhalen met de HD remakes van Ico & Shadow of the Colossus op de Playstation 3. Mogelijk worden we eind dit jaar ook verblijd met The Last Guardian.
