Nomadland wint bij de Oscars
Chloé Zhao's Nomadland heeft bij de uitreiking van de Academy Awards afgelopen nacht de meeste beeldjes meegenomen; van de zes nominaties werden er drie verzilverd, voor beste film, regie en de hoofdrol, gespeeld door Frances McDormand.

Met haar winst voor regie werd Zhao de tweede vrouw en de eerste vrouw van kleur in Oscargeschiedenis om deze prijs te winnen. Een record werd ook gebroken door Anthony Hopkins, die voor zijn rol in The Father de prijs voor beste acteur won en daarmee, met 83 jaar, de oudste ontvanger van die prijs werd. Het is zijn tweede winst na die voor Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Hopkins' winst betekent dat Chadwick Boseman niet postuum geëerd wordt voor zijn rol in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
De ceremonie werd vannacht in aangepaste vorm georganiseerd; ook in de VS is het coronavirus nog niet onder controle en dus was een grote samenkomst van de (Amerikaanse) filmwereld niet wenselijk. De show had alleen de genomineerden en presentators uitgenodigd; anderen moesten dit jaar thuis blijven.
