Europese Commissie dringt aan op gebruik van PEGI

De Europese Commissie heeft aangegeven dat ze aan zullen dringen op het gebruik van PEGI bij de Europese lidstaten. PEGI staat voor Pan-European Game Information: een leeftijdsclassificatiesysteem dat is opgezet om Europese ouders te helpen overwogen beslissingen te nemen over de aankoop van computerspellen.

Een rapport van Toine Manders, lid van de commissie Interne Markt & Consumentenbescherming, waarin hij opriep voor een breder gebruik van zowel PEGI als PEGI Online, zorgde ervoor dat de discussie om kinderen te beschermen tegen content voor volwassenen oplaaide. Volgens Michael Rawlinson van de ELSPA (Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association) heeft Manders zeer nauwkeurig gekeken naar in hoeverre een classificatiesysteem voor games dat goed werkt in de Europese Unie nodig is en heeft hij geconcludeerd dat PEGI de juiste weg ingeslagen is voor zowel online als offline content:

"It is a ringing endorsement of the rating system that we in the UK were instrumental in helping to set up several years ago. The protection of children is of paramount important to this industry and we are delighted that a body as significant at the EU's Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs committee fully comprehends the merits of Pegi", aldus Rawlinson.
