Eidos: Britse regering neemt gamesindustrie niet serieus

De ELSPA, the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association, heeft zich achter de uitspraak van Eidos CEO Jane Cavanagh geschaard. Zij zei eerder deze week dat de Britse regering de gamesindustrie niet serieus neemt.
In de Engelse gamesindustrie werken momenteel 22.000 mensen. Door de creatieve output en technische voorsprong stond Engeland tot voor kort derde in de wereld op de lijst van creative development and publishing supermachten. Door de stilstand de laatste tijd is het lang gezakt naar de vierde plek, achter de VS, Canada en Japan.

Omdat de arbeidsvoorwaarden in die landen nu eenmaal gunstig zijn heeft ook Eidos, wiens hoofdkantoor wel in Engeland staat, onlangs een nieuwe studio geopend in Quebec. Cavanagh legde in het blad MCV uit waarom:

"Quebec offers a 37.5 per cent contribution towards development salaries, which is a huge incentive. Over the years, people have tried lobby for this sort of funding in the UK – in line with the perks given to UK film studios – and the result has been pretty much nil. It seems that this industry is not being taken seriously: not only in terms of retaining talent, but for foreign companies to come in and create a pool of talent."

Paul Jackson, general director van de ELSPA, was het volledig eens met de uitspraken van Cavanagh:

Jane's comments reflect the very serious position the industry finds itself in. ELSPA has been engaging with the new Brown government on this issue via the DCMS and DEBRR. Our impression is that government understand that there is a serious problem here and we have been invited back to discuss the issue further. However we are wary that historically government has never really given us the support we require when compared with other industries in our sector. It is therefore up to this new administration to reverse the failings of the past and fully support the games industry at this difficult time.

De Britse gamesindustrie is nog steeds een van de grootste in de wereld. Er wordt meer geëxporteerd dan dat er binnenkomt. Dit alles zonder steun van publieke fondsen, iets dat de filmindustrie wel krijgt.
