Historische albums: Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal Tendencies (1983)

Voor het Historische Album van de Week gaan we deze week terug naar het jaar 1983. Een dag na Independence Day lag het debuutalbum van de Amerikaanse hardcore punkband Suicidal Tendencies in de betere Amerikaanse platenwinkels. Bij Suicidal Tendencies zullen velen denken aan de crossover band, die metal op eigenzinnige wijze combineerde met ouderwetse funk en punk. Toch begon de band ooit als een onvervalste Amerikaanse punkband.

De band wordt in 1981 opgericht door zanger Mike Muir, gitarist Mike Ball, bassist Mike Dunnigan en drummer Carlos "Egie" Egert. In 1982 roept het blad Flipside de band nog uit tot winnaars in de categorieën 'slechtste band van het jaar' en 'grootste klootzakken in de punkscene', maar nog geen jaar later weet de groep, die ooit voor de lol werd opgericht, het tot 'beste band van het jaar' te schoppen. On 1983 tekent de groep een contract bij het label Frontier Records en mag daar haar eerste album uit gaan brengen. Het was het begin van de muzikale loopbaan waarbij de groep zou worden uitgeroepen als pioniers van de crossover thrash-scene, maar op het debuutalbum van de legendarische punkband uit Venice in Californië is echter nog maar heel weinig te horen van die latere thrash metal-invloeden.

Suicidal Tendencies werd in februari 1983 opgenomen in de Golden Age Recording Studios in Hollywood. Samen met producer Glen E. Friedman, uitgever van het undergroundblad My Rules, neemt de groep, die op dat moment bestaat uit zanger Mike Muir, gitarist Grant Estes, bassist Louiche Mayorga en drummer Amery Smith, een twaalftal nummers op voor haar debuutalbum. Friedman is ook de man die de bandleden ondersteboven hangend op de gevoelige plaat vastlegt, voor de hoes van misschien wel het bestverkochte indie-punk album aller tijden. Daarnaast zijn we op deze hoes ook een collage van zelfgemaakte Suicidal Tendencies t-shirts.

Het succes voor de groep begint als het er een videoclip wordt gemaakt bij het nummer 'Institutionalized'. De clip is regelmatig te zien op de zender MTV, waar in die tijd nog regelmatig videoclips te zien waren, in plaats van over het paard getrapte jankende zestienjarige kutkinderen met de verkeerde kleur Ferrari of ander kijkvoer voor hersenloos volk. 'Institutionalized' zorgde in elk geval voor grote naamsbekendheid van de band en de plaat ging als warme broodjes over de toonbank.

Ook in de pers werd het album goed ontvangen. Zo schreef Pushead van MaximumRockNRoll het volgende over dit album: "Blistering rough-arsed metal thrash! Untamed havoc of shimmering propensity, thrusting wild whines of alarming guitar wails into glass-shattering breakneck speed as chilling vocals by the storming crooner Mike Muir claw forth a devastating attack. Suicidal Tendencies are a screaming cyclone of sheer power and determination, and this LP shows why they have such a strong following."

Ook Javi Savage, van het blad Big City, was zeer lovend over het debuutalbum van Suicidal Tendencies. Zo lezen we in het blad het volgende: "This got my vote for the best album of the summer. Intense Los Angeles punkrock, heavy thrash, heavy metal and heavy rock all rolled into one. Some interesting lyrics, mostly dealing with true to life things. But there is a humorous side also to some of Mike Muir's lyrics. I'm really enjoying this record and I know you will too. Thirteen songs produced by Glen Friedman on Frontier Records (the people who brought you T.S.O.L., Adolescents and the Circle Jerks)."

Ook in muzikale kringen wordt het debuutalbum van Suicidal Tendencies geroemd. Zo heeft Anthrax gitarist Scott Ian de plaat in zijn top 10 van beste thrashmetal albums staan. Ian: "I just think it’s a perfect album. Every song on it is great. It’s a perfect crossover between hardcore punk and metal, and I guess that’s what makes thrash metal — all those genre combined, and Suicidal were the first ones to do it because that record came out in ’83." Ook het liedje 'Institutionalized' zorgt voor inspiratie voor bands zoals Limp Bizkit in het liedje 'Stuck' ("All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi Far from suicidal, still I get them tendencies Bringing back them memories That I really miss when I reminisce.") en Cypress Hills 'How I Could Just Kill a Man', waarin we bij het outro "All I wanted was a Pepsi" horen.

I took all my mothers sleeping pills.

In 1993 neemt de groep de plaat opnieuw op en brengt deze uit onder de titel Still Cyco After All These Years. Naast de twaalf nummers van Suicidal Tendencies horen we ook een tweetal liedjes van het album Join The Army. Suicidal Tendencies vormde het beginpunt van een succesvolle muzikale carrière en zou als een grote inspiratebron dienen voor vele latere bandjes. Met epische albums zoals How Will I Laugh Tomorrow ... When I Can't Even Smile Today, Lights ... Camera ... Revolution en The Art of Rebellion kreeg de band een grote groep trouwe fans, die tot op de dag van vandaag de punkhelden uit Californië trouw bleven.

Het verhaal gaat dat de band zelfs de FBI op bezoek kreeg toen deze hadden vernomen dat Suicidal Tendencies een liedje op hun repertoire had staan met de titel 'I Shot Reagan'. Men zegt dat de sterke arm der wet de mannen verzocht om de titel te veranderen in 'I Shot Satan'. Voor zover we weten heeft de duivel zich nooit beklaagd over deze beledigende vergelijking met de mislukte z-acteur uit vergeten tijden.
